Let’s begin with the concept of Discipline. The term ‘discipline’ refers to a state of orderly conduct of an individual which is gained through training in self-control and in habits of obedience to socially approved standards of thought and action. It implies a good understanding of right conduct. The genesis of the word ‘discipline’ is supposed from the Latin word “disciplina” which means management, rule, education, practice, teaching and trained condition. In this way, the meaning of discipline is to create regularity in conduct. Literally discipline is a mode of life in accordance with certain rules and regulations. The formation of desirable habits and attitudes and an adherence to such standards are just and necessary. It includes the socialization of behaviour, the manner of working and living in co-operation and subordination of individual interests to group interests. Discipline is the practice of training people to obey the rules and regulations. It is a method of training our mind or body and of controlling our behaviour in an area of activity where this is necessary. Discipline builds a person character, nature and personality. It is in life very important and necessary in order to achieve good results. Discipline is an art that requires knowledge, skill, sensitivity and self-confidence. Discipline is also means teaching acceptable behaviours and unlearning maladaptive behaviours with support, guidance and direction in managing behaviour. It is about setting limits, clarifying roles, responsibilities and mutual expectations and creating a predictable, orderly and stable life.

Discipline in Educational Institution

There is no denying the fact that provision of the quality education and learning is the ultimate goal of an educational system. We are also aware of the fact that the success of teaching is measured through academic performance of the students. This goal can never be achieved without discipline in the school.

This means, effective discipline helps in the achievement of goals, expectation and responsibility in the students. Good discipline creates a good image of the schools and prepares students for their future life. Disruptive behaviour amongst students eliminated if there is good discipline at schools.

The implementation of effective discipline in schools is a key factor for the students in their journey to adulthood. Positive discipline allows students to learn and adapt their behaviours to meet expectations in the classroom, while simultaneously teaching them how to make better choices in adulthood. Maintaining good discipline in schools lays a good foundation of being selective, independent, punctual, focused and encouraged and organized in the student’s life.

Discipline in school generally means, “order and system in doing things, regularity and obedience to commands.” School discipline relates to the actions taken by a teacher on the school organizations towards a student or a group of students when the student’s behaviour disrupts the ongoing educational activities or breaks a rule created by the school. Discipline can guide the student’s behaviour or set limits to help them learn to take better care of themselves, other people and their surroundings. School system set rules and if students break these rules, they are subject to discipline. School discipline refers to the rules and strategies applied ins chool to manage student behaviour and practices used to encourage self-discipline. School discipline addresses school, classroom and individual student needs through broad prevention, targeted intervention and development of self-discipline.

Components of Discipline

The foundation of discipline is deeply rooted in the total school programme and classrooms situation. It has a set of components. Some of the most important components of discipline which are used in educational institutions are as follows-

Head of the institution

The success or failure of any educational institution depends upon the personality of the head of that educational institution. He/she must possess some philosophy of discipline. He/she must have some well-grounded fundamental principles which guide him to treat the teachers and students.

The Teacher

The teacher is the fountain head of discipline and character formation. With good teachers, half the problem of school discipline disappears. Every teacher has to great role to maintain smooth discipline in their institutions as well as their social platform.

Co-curricular activities

Sports, Scouting, N.C.C, Social service and community activities may develop in students a sense of self-control and self-confidence which is the cornerstone of discipline. Social co-operation, respect for authority and leadership training can pave the right way of instructing them in the fundamentals of true discipline.

A sense of unity, co-operation and fellow feeling prevailing among the school staffis sure to reflect upon the pupils. The young pupils in schools watch very minutely the activities of their teachers and try to imitate them for good or bad, as the case may be. It is therefore necessary that in order to promote discipline among pupils, it must first be established and maintained among the members of school-staff.
