Chairman’s Message January. 2026
With the advent of advanced technology, social media has grown (and continues to grow) to unprecedentedlevels. The platform has emerged as the most powerful medium of communication, bringing faster social change at the click of a button, never seen before. Besides, social media provides innovative solutions in creating brand value and building reputation of organisations as well as individuals. The beauty of this medium is that it’s relevant to all sectors and its productive use solely depends upon the wisdom of individuals and organisations. Any sort of mishandling of social mediacan be devastating and may cause irreparable loss to there putation of individuals and organisations.
In the context of the education sector, the use of social media by all stakeholders is rampant and demands as ound social media policy to capitalise on its power for productive communication. Very little attention has been given by the schools and educational institutes to frame asocial media policy. Otherwise, it is crucial and inevitable to have one in the given scenario, where not only are students constantly on social media, but their parents, and even school staff, use it daily.
Specifically discussing the use of social media in the context of schools, we find it is loaded with certain unimaginable risks and challenges, including cyber bullying, inappropriate content, and violations of student privacy. To address these concerns, schools need to establish a comprehensive social media policy that outlines its acceptable use, establishes guidelines forappropriate behaviour, and provides consequences forviolations.
Creating a policy that outlines how school will approach social media, the expectations of staff and students, and the guidelines for use will help to ensure a safe and positive online environment for everyone in the net workof school, while also protecting the school and the school’s brand.
A social media policy takes care of the most critical stakeholder of the school – the students. Because students are online at school, at home, and everywhere in between, the school needs to outline clearly what is (and what isn’t) acceptable for students to post about the school. A social media policy provides clear guide linesto them for appropriate behaviour on social mediaplatforms, both during and outside of school hours. It also helps to ensure that school-related content posted online is accurate, appropriate, and respectful. A social media policy can protect students and staff members from online harassment and inappropriate interactions. Overall, a social media policy is an important tool for promoting a safe and positive school environment in the digital age.
Key takeaways of a social media policy in school education include:
Protecting Students: It should safeguards student privacy and confidentiality by preventing the sharing of sensitive information online.
Maintaining Safety: It should help prevent cyber bullying, harassment, and other forms of online harm.
Promoting Responsible Behaviour: The social media policy should encourages students, teachers, and staff to use the platforms responsibly and ethically.
Protecting the School’s Reputation: The policy should help the school to maintain a positive image by addressing potential online issues.
Legal Compliance: It should ensure that the school complies with relevant laws and regulations related to privacy and online safety of all stakeholders.
